2026 ERCU Rule Books

Everything you need to build, register and race with ERCU. The club’s rules are published in three rule books, adopted January 5, 2026, plus two competition directives issued during the season.

Drivers should be familiar with the General Rules and Racing Rules, and builders will find boat specifications in the Technical Manual.

Adopted Jan. 5, 2026 3 rule books 2 competition directives

Competition directives

Directives are issued by the Competition Committee during the season. Each one automatically becomes a proposal for the off-season rules review.

Directive 2026-2

1/10 scale motors: up to 2050kv allowed

Because motors are becoming harder to find, 1/10-scale motors rated up to 2050kv by the manufacturer are legal for the rest of the 2026 season, and must not test above 2100kv. Board inspectors will keep testing motors, members may request testing, and random testing can happen at any time. The Competition Committee will suggest a permanent rule after the season.

Read the full directive

This Competition Directive comes at the recommendation of the board chair to the Competition Committee in response to concerns about the rising lack of availability of motors for the 1/10 scale classes.

For the remainder of the 2026 ERCU racing season, 1/10 scale motor kv ratings of up to 2050kv (manufacturer’s rating) with testing to not exceed 2100kv. After the end of the 2026 racing season, the Competition Committee will meet to suggest a permanent rule change. This way members are legal with motors that they have and further discussion, after the season, will be informed by data and observations from the remainder of the season.

Enforcement

Board inspectors will continue to inspect and test motor kv ratings and results as they have been throughout the season. Members may also voluntarily request motor inspections and testing. The current rule book also allows for random motor testing at any time, which may also be enforced at any given time.

Reminder

All Competition Directives issued by the Competition Committee during the course of the season automatically become proposals for the committee to consider during the process of offseason rules review.

Collision rules

Issued after the Diamond Cup. A boat that causes another to fail to finish is disqualified from that heat, and the affected boat receives 169 compensation points. The disqualified driver must start their next heat as a trailer, five seconds behind the field.

Read the full directive

This Competition Directive comes at the recommendation of the board of directors to the Competition Committee as a response to concerns presented to the board by club members after the Diamond Cup.

C. Collision Rules

  1. The definition of a collision is “contact between two boats that impedes the progress of one boat by another and/or causes visual damage (broken or missing parts, hull cracks, etc.) before and during a heat, or any time two boats are on the water at the same time.”
  2. A boat that strikes another boat, causing it to not finish the heat, will be disqualified from the heat.
  3. If a boat is taken out of a heat in a collision or because of a penalty on another boat, the offended boat will be awarded 169 points as compensation.
  4. If a boat is off plane, the driver must yield to other boats before trying to re-enter the racecourse to not interfere with the progress of other boats.
  5. Interference will result in a one-lap penalty.
  6. A boat that is disqualified from a heat per this rule must start as a trailer boat five seconds behind the field in that boat’s next heat. This trailer start penalty applies and must be served before the boat may return to the front line regardless if the penalized boat’s next heat will occur at the current race or at a future race.

Enforcement

Chief Referee and disqualified driver must be notified by the drivers rep of the required trailer start immediately after the heat where the disqualification occurred. The Chief Referee must remind the disqualified driver of a trailer start being required prior to the start of the one minute-thirty second clock for the driver’s next heat.
